Style Experimentation (Sketch Dump)

I found the style used for Sparrow's head shots the easiest to reproduce and experimented around with characters for practice

Rather than dive straight into designing I worked mostly on fan art so I could focus more on getting the style right until I was comfortable

Sakura & Naruto (c) Masashi Kishimoto

(WIP)
Character inspired by SEGA's Knuckles the Echidna

I also began practicing with colours and focusing more or colour theory rather than what I wanted

(WIP)
Graces F (c) Namco Bandai/ Howl (c) Ghibli cross over

I tried to ease myself into including more detailed backgrounds so I could practice with lighting and scenes

Character Head Shot
Juris Iden - Standby phase

The Tales games usually have animated sprites or stills of various expressions to go with skits as well as during battle phases with a standby, damage and attack sprite

Commission piece - Rai
Another chance to experiment with style without worrying too much about design
A simple background/ light/ effects practice

Link (c) Legend of Zelda Nintendo
Next to Tales games and character designs Zelda and Link are my favourite gaming franchise/characters

I tried to push myself with this one and attempted perhaps a more adventurous background/ effects/lighting

Me in a Game - Companions

Companions to go alongside the in game me
(Cealc as a secondary character or female lead)

I wanted elements of folklore and dragons/wyverns in particular, so I'd decided to give this character 'Sparrow' some qualities that could mimic his wyvern partner 'Kunic'.

This was a pretty quick design so I didn't give it all too much forethought, just to get a basic idea of the type of style I wanted the character to have. This approach probably doesn't work as well as when I designed 'Cealc' using references for clothes and styles so I probably won't keep this design.

Sparrow and Kunic
(Initial colour idea)

I looked at skeletons and bodies of animals like komodo dragons, lizards (specifically the Thorny Devil for its horns, which resemble a dragon's crown perhaps) and snakes, as 'Kunic' is a traditional wyvern with no hind legs.

Though again this is just one concept. I looked at African Kudu for Kunic's horns for the first design; the look interesting but I will probably experiment with shape and thickness some more before anything becomes concrete.

I designed Sparrow to be a male protagonist type character so I wanted him to stand out

Odd/Unique dark skin blond hair (I like the contrast) and the red scarf (bold)

(Style experimentation)
Loosely based around the Tales Production I.G anime sprite style

Experiment with Sparrows ethnicity. Depending on his location: 1 - Desert 2 - Forest/Grassy Plain

Me in a Game

As I like the Tales fantasy series I decided to make a character (myself) as if she were a Tales character.

Me

I decided the game variant of me would be called Cealc (meaning chalk, Chelsea loosely meaning 'chalk or lime deposit')
This is an initial design idea setting the look and style I want to largely go for

I tried emulating the style used by Production I.G in many of the Tales games but not completely mimicking it
Inspired by Japanese kimono (date and juban han eri style collar, obi and obiage - supports the obi - with obijime and ohashiori - length adjusting fold of a kimono and long sleeves) and Northern American tribe garb (loose trails of fabric, skin/hide boots, beads - as on dream catchers - feathers and print, long braided hair)

Fujishima's designs usually have a Japanese quality to them, what looks like kimono with an obi sash of sorts, date eri and juban han eri style collars and the shirts fold over almost on the style of kimonos.

Rita wearing what looks very much like an 'obi' (her belt). The layered collar like the juban han and date eri collars of kimono's.

*Concept 2 is more in line with what I initially imagined, 3 I went for a more Native American traditional look. 1 and 4 were purely colour experimentations
